Before studying at the University of Worcester I worked within a nursery and had always wanted to complete an early years degree. After having my daughter and watching how different experiences helped to shape her personality, I was intrigued to investigate this further, therefore I embarked on the adventure of studying on the FdA Early Years (FDEY) Flexible and Distributed Learning route.
I started the FDEY without a career goal, although on the course you learn that is ok. You learn more about your own professional values and beliefs. The professional practice route also enabled me to be more employable as I gained a relevant qualification to be counted in ratios within early years settings. This resulted in being given more responsibility in my placement settings and gaining more experiences for future practice and job roles.
On completion of the FDEY I remain without a final career goal. However, I have gained confidence to share my opinions, found the words to express my love for play and why it is important for children, and I have the confidence to advocate this in the setting. Through engaging in topics, I knew nothing about and enjoying modules I did not think I would enjoy, modules such as ‘policy into practice’, I have developed my practice in various areas.
I chose to study at the University of Worcester as it provided the flexible and distributed learning (FDL) option. This route allowed me to juggle my time between working part time, raising a family and studying. The FDL route enabled me to study when my daughter was in school or in bed, leaving time to be with her in the evenings and weekends.
What did I find challenging during my studies?
I found giving up difficult. When I found I couldn’t find words to type or when I was reading something and it didn’t make any sense whatsoever, I found it difficult to stop, walk away or even try again tomorrow. It is important to leave it, even if it is for a minute and it is equally important to not give yourself a hard time about it. The words will come, just save yourself time and stress by taking a break.
Following the completion of the FDEY I have enrolled on the BA(Hons) Integrated and Working with Children and Families Top up degree, and this will coincide with my work within a school. I look forward to developing my practice further and to see where the Top up degree takes me in my career path.
