Graduate Stories: Tonya Hales, BA(Hons) IWCF

Tonya Hales, Class of 2025 graduate, shares her advice on returning to study as a mature student.

When I first embarked on my studies at the University of Worcester on the FdA Early Years, it felt like the beginning of a completely new chapter in my life. Before coming here, I had worked as a Teaching Assistant in a Year One classroom, and while I loved supporting children in their learning, I knew I wanted to push myself further. Returning to education as a mature student was a big decision, especially as I had left school with very few qualifications. In my forties, I completed my GCSE equivalents in Maths and English and later achieved my Level 4 NVQ in Child Development, which reignited my passion for learning, which I started at 49.  I now graduate with a BA(Hons) in Integrated Working with Children and Families!

The journey was not without challenges. At times, I struggled with imposter syndrome and found academic writing especially daunting. Being dyslexic added another layer of difficulty, but my determination to succeed was stronger than my doubts. Having grown up with limited opportunities, I was motivated to prove to myself that I could achieve something I once thought impossible. Along the way, I discovered resilience I didn’t know I had.

What I valued most about my studies was the depth of knowledge I gained—particularly in areas such as early years mental health, the power of play, and working with families. These topics not only shaped my professional practice but also changed how I see and respond to the needs of others. I feel more confident, proactive, and willing to speak up in ways I wouldn’t have before.

Looking ahead, I plan to take a year out before returning to train as a college tutor. My time at UW has made me stronger and more confident in my abilities, and I now feel ready to inspire others as I was inspired. To new students, I would say: embrace the journey, believe in yourself, and never underestimate what you can achieve.
