In this graduate story, Jennie Hurdiss shares her journey through Higher Education with balancing work and family, having completed the BA(Hons) Integrated Working with Children and Families Top up degree.

Starting university was not an easy decision, especially when considering the practicalities of being a working single parent with SEN children. However, one spontaneous choice in the summer of 2022 has led me here: completing a degree in working with children and families with first-class honours! I honestly never thought this would be possible for me but with hard work, perseverance, and determination, I succeeded. Let’s not underestimate the amount of effort and dedication this degree demands because, honestly, it’s a lot! Time management is a student’s most valuable asset.
Before starting this course, I worked as an early years practitioner. The BA(Hons) IWCF has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to become a significantly better practitioner. I also completed the Foundation Degree in Early Years, which motivated me to enrol on this course. Completing the foundation degree supported my university journey, and I believe it helped me perform as well as I did in the degree – working with children and families.
Throughout this one-year course, I found the staff extremely supportive and flexible, which was essential given my busy life. This course has been the most eye-opening experience for me, both personally and professionally; it has inspired me to make some small, positive changes in my life. One aspect that initially made me uncomfortable was the deep level of reflection required in one of the modules; however, this module turned out to be one of my favourites. It allowed me to explore myself deeply, both personally and professionally, and provided me with a solid understanding of who I am, supported by relevant theory that reinforced my existing ideas.
I am uncertain about what the future holds for me. I have been torn between teaching and social work, and I remain undecided. But for now, I am enjoying my time at the preschool where I have worked for nearly 10 years, while taking a little break from studying.
