Graduate Stories: Caroline James, BA(Hons) IWCF Top up

In this graduate story, Caroline James shares her journey through Higher Education having completed the BA(Hons) Integrated Working with Children and Families Top up degree.

The BA (Hons) in Integrated Working with Children and Families was never a path I had planned to take during my Early Years Foundation Degree, nor did I think it was within my capabilities. I just wanted to further my knowledge and understanding within the early years sector, where I have worked for 25 years. If I am honest, it has been a tough year, balancing work, family, life commitments, and my degree. Of course, there were times when I had impostor syndrome and thought the degree was not for me; however, the support of my peer group – some of whom I have known since the start of the Foundation Degree – and the support of the staff, gave me the reassurance that we all have our wobbles and that is okay.

Overall, I found the course to be extremely interesting and reflective of my role as an early years practitioner. It has allowed me to think about my position in the early years environment and the other career directions I could be heading in. It has also made me reflect on the importance of change, something I have always been scared of, but am now ready to embrace.

My advice to anyone undertaking this degree is to avoid getting overwhelmed and stay organised. Embrace the face-to-face sessions, they are a fountain of knowledge and a blend of ideas that help and support your practice.
