Caroline graduated from the FdA Early Years (0-8 years) at the University of Worcester having studied on the Flexible and Distributed Learning pathway. Here she reflects on her Higher Education journey…
“I had worked as a level 3 qualified early years practitioner for over 20 years, and when my qualification became questionable to its full relevance, I panicked. It was okay; however, I realised it was time to gain more knowledge and understanding about the Early Years. I attended the open day at the University of Worcester, where staff welcomed me, including one lovely lady, Liv, who also taught me in my first year. I probably would not have done it, if it had not been for her encouragement to join the course.
It has not been easy; like most in my cohort, I have had wobbles. Mine came on the first of October when the assessments started to build up, and I doubted my ability to complete the course. Was it really for me? My second came at Christmas in the second year. Once again, I was overwhelmed by what was expected and whether the course was for me.
During these struggles, I was constantly reminded of something Michelle Malomo had done with us in one of the first Face to Face sessions. She got us to close our eyes and imagine ourselves outside Worcester Cathedral surrounded by our classmates and family, wearing our cap and gowns, having just graduated. This vision has genuinely helped me in these challenging times.
This course has given me the confidence and knowledge to support or even question my practice. The one aspect of this course I dreaded was the face-to-face sessions, as I was somewhat shy, until I found out that people were my favourite part of the course, and I made true friends. Sharing information from a range of settings has been fascinating. The new information and discussions you gain on this course are inspirational.
I am now progressing onto the BA(Hons) Integrated Working with Children and Families Top up degree, which I never thought would be within my reach. After this, I do not have a career plan, but I am just enjoying the learning journey.
One important piece of advice I would give is to avoid feeling overwhelmed, stay organised, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. The staff are here to support you rather than criticise you, even if it may not always feel that way. Their goal is to help you become the best version of yourself.”
